Description

About the role:

Reporting to the Superintendent Asset Strategy, this is a key role for an experienced Structural Engineer who thrives on solving complex structural asset challenges in a heavy industrial environment. You will provide structural engineering expertise across major fixed and mobile assets, with a strong focus on asset integrity, defect governance and elimination, risk reduction, and whole-of-life planning.

This role is ideal for someone who can confidently step into an operational and technically influential position — assessing structural condition and risk, supporting sound engineering decisions, developing engineering concepts and solutions and helping ensure Port Waratah’s assets remain safe, reliable and fit for purpose over the long term. You will work closely with stakeholders across the business (internal and external) to prioritise structural integrity defect rectification, shape asset strategies, and develop practical, commercially sound solutions that support terminal performance and future capacity requirements.

This is an full-time onsite role based in Newcastle, NSW.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the structural integrity management process, with a risk-based approach to identifying, assessing and managing structural asset risks
  • Provide structural engineering support and advice across the business, including engineering standards and specifications
  • Conduct engineering investigations, feasibility studies, options analysis, and develop fit-for-purpose engineering solutions and cost estimates
  • Contribute to whole-of-life asset plans, asset risk registers, and business cases to improve long-term decision making and sustainable asset performance
  • Partner with teams to influence structural asset strategy, prioritise critical work, and maximise reliability.

Skills And Experiences

Desired Skills and Experience:

What we are looking for:

  • A degree qualification in Structural or Civil Engineering (essential)
  • Structural engineering experience in an industrial or heavy asset environment, such as bulk materials handling, mining, ports, manufacturing or similar.
  • Proven experience in asset integrity, structural condition assessment, and risk-based defect management
  • Ability to provide practical engineering advice, lead through influence, and work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Effective problem-solving, communication and time management skills

Benefits:

  • Competitive remuneration package including 18.5% Superannuation
  • Work to Live Culture including generous leave entitlements (16-week parental leave and 5 weeks annual leave)
  • Opportunities for industry networking and professional development and participation in community engagement activities.
