About the Project

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering rare earths refining project, positioning Tronox and Western Australia at the forefront of the emerging critical minerals market. Tronox is establishing an in-house engineering team to lead the design and delivery of this facility offering genuine, hands-on engineering involvement in a technically complex and first-of-its-kind project.

You will have the opportunity to contribute across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility study and detailed design through to construction, commissioning, and operational ramp-up. This end-to-end exposure provides invaluable experience and the chance to shape a key asset from concept through to production.

The facility will be developed within the Perth metropolitan area, allowing regular site access during construction and commissioning without the need for FIFO travel.

The project team is based in a newly established office in Fremantle, designed to support collaboration and productivity. The workspace features large, well-spaced workstations, dedicated focus areas, modern meeting rooms, and a balcony. Located just minutes from Fremantle train station, the office offers excellent accessibility, nearby parking, and end-of-trip facilities for those who prefer to cycle.

About the Role

Tronox is seeking a technically strong and delivery-focused Senior Mechanical & Piping Engineer to join the mechanical and piping engineering team across both the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) and Execution phases of a major Rare Earths project in Western Australia.

Reporting to the Lead Mechanical & Piping Engineer, this position plays a key role in executing the mechanical and piping scope during the DFS phase, involved across engineering work packs, engineering deliverables, and preliminary layouts. The role will focus on delivering integrated, constructible, and cost-effective solutions that meet project objectives, regulatory requirements, and operational readiness criteria.

Initially offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract for the DFS phase, this role is designed to become permanent once the project achieves FID and moves into Execution, where the mechanical/piping team scope will expand to include detailed design oversight, construction support, and commissioning readiness.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Development & Oversight

  • Aid in developing technology selection studies to ensure optimised equipment selection
  • Production and checking of mechanical and piping design deliverables, including equipment specification, data sheet generation, equipment layouts and piping routing, material selection, and stress analysis
  • Mechanical and piping contributions to the 3D model, ensuring equipment placement, pipe routing, and supporting systems are coordinated with other engineering disciplines
  • Update and follow mechanical and piping engineering standards and specifications aligned with project requirements and industry best practices.
  • Review and contribute to mechanical and piping drawings, calculations, and vendor documentation to ensure technical quality and compliance

Integration & Coordination

  • Collaborate with process, piping, civil, structural, and EC&I teams to ensure integrated and clash-free designs
  • Interface with the engineering service provider for mechanical and piping scope
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders, including input to deliverables, and technical queries
  • Liaise with equipment vendors and suppliers to obtain technical data and support procurement activities

Execution Support

  • Provide field engineering support during construction, including inspections and issue resolution
  • Support commissioning teams in testing and validating mechanical and piping systems
  • Contribute to early works planning, construction sequencing, and commissioning readiness
  • Ensure systems are aligned with operational requirements and safety standards

Governance & Reporting

  • Follow quality assurance processes and document technical risks and design changes
  • Contribute inputs to discipline schedules and progress tracking in coordination with Lead Mechanical & Piping Engineer and project controls
  • Contribute to project reviews and stakeholder engagement
  • Contribute to preparation of mechanical and piping documentation for commissioning and operations

About You

To be successful in your application you will bring

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in mechanical and piping engineering for major industrial or resource projects, with a strong background in large‑scale greenfield processing or industrial plant developments
  • Strong capability in design development, vendor engagement, and execution planning.
  • Understanding of mechanical and piping standards, codes (e.g., ASME, API), and regulatory compliance.
