Senior Farm Hand

Meridian Ag Recruitment is seeking a Senior Farm Hand on behalf of a family-owned mixed farming business in the Benalla region.

This large-scale 3,200 hectare enterprise runs fine Merino and prime lamb operations alongside Angus cattle, pasture renovation and cropping programs. The role offers genuine variety, responsibility and long-term opportunity for the right person.

The Senior Farm Hand is a full-time position, and will be required to live on farm full-time, in accommodation provided by the employer. 

The Role

Working closely with the Farm Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of the property, including:

• Livestock handling and animal husbandry across sheep and cattle
• Sheep work including lambing, engagement with shearing and crutching contractors, drenching and flock management
• Cattle handling, drafting, yard work and animal health monitoring
• Tractor driving and general machinery operations
• General plant, infrastructure and property maintenance
• Working independently and as part of a small team, and with external contractors
• Observing livestock, machinery and property conditions, OHS and bio security issues, and reporting any irregularities

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Strong practical experience with sheep, cattle and machinery
• Sound animal husbandry and livestock handling skills
• The ability to work autonomously and take initiative
• Good observation skills and clear communication
• A sound understanding of livestock electronic tagging systems
• Suitable working dogs for livestock work
• A current truck licence – or willingness to obtain (at the cost of the employer)
• Tertiary qualifications in Agriculture are desirable
• Current Chemical Certification – or willingness to obtain
