Position Summary
The Depot Hand supports the safe and efficient daily operations of the Roebourne/Wickham Transfer Station. The role involves assisting residents with waste disposal, maintaining site cleanliness, monitoring waste streams, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental requirements.
This is a hands-on, outdoor role requiring a high level of awareness, customer interaction, and adherence to site procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct residents to correct waste and recycling areas
- Assist customers with unloading waste where required
- Monitor incoming waste to ensure only approved materials are accepted
- Identify and refuse prohibited items in line with site guidelines
- Maintain cleanliness of the site, including litter control and bin management
- Oversee correct use of recycling areas, including:
General waste, Green waste, Scrap metal and whitegoods, Cardboard, plastics, cans, and glass, Motor oil and batteries (within accepted limits)
- Provide clear instructions to residents on waste separation and disposal
- Support safe traffic flow within the facility
- Report hazards, incidents, or non-compliance to supervisor
- Complete basic site records or logs as required
Work Health, Safety & Environment (WHSE)
- Follow all WHS policies and procedures at all times
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and waste handling requirements
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times
- Identify and escalate unsafe behaviours or hazards
- Participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings
Customer Service
- Provide friendly and respectful assistance to community members
- Respond to general enquiries about waste disposal and recycling
- Manage difficult interactions calmly and professionally
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience in labouring, waste management, or similar (desirable)
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Good communication skills and ability to deal with the public
- Strong awareness of safety and site compliance requirements
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
Qualifications & Requirements
- Current Driver’s Licence (desirable)
- White Card (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to pass pre-employment medical and Drug & Alcohol screening
- Ability to work rostered hours:
7:00am – 4:30pm
Including weekends and public holidays (excluding Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday)
