Description

The Store Person / Electrical Trade Assistant is responsible for supporting Switchboard & Power Controls’ workshop, site, and retail operations by managing electrical materials, tools, and inventory while providing efficient assistance to electricians and supervisors. The role involves receiving, storing, issuing, and maintaining stock, preparing purchase orders, and ensuring materials are available to meet production and customer requirements. The position also assists with basic electrical and workshop tasks under supervision, maintains high standards of housekeeping and safety, and provides professional customer service where required. All duties are performed in accordance with company quality, safety, and environmental management systems, with a strong focus on teamwork, compliance, and continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities 

Safety & Environmental

  • Actively support and demonstrate Switchboard & Power Controls’ commitment to Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (EHS) compliance within the retail and store environment.

  • Follow and promote safe work practices and procedures in accordance with Switchboard & Power Controls’ Management Systems, safety policies, and store procedures.

  • Identify, eliminate, and report workplace hazards and incidents; participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency drills as required.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized retail store and storage areas to minimize risks to staff, customers, and contractors.

  • Conduct all activities in line with Switchboard & Power Controls’ environmental policies, with particular focus on waste reduction, recycling, and minimizing energy and material usage.

  • Maintain an understanding of emergency procedures, including evacuation, safety shutdowns, and use of emergency equipment relevant to a retail/store environment.

  • Assist in ensuring all retail, storage, and handling activities comply with statutory and corporate safety requirements.

  • Comply with customer, contractor, or site-specific Permit-to-Work requirements when applicable.

  • Be familiar with and support the Switchboard & Power Controls Emergency Response Plan.

Organizational

  • Report directly to the Electrical Supervisor, Electrician, or designated Manager.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with electricians, supervisors, management, suppliers, and customers.

  • Support teamwork and positive communication across workshop, site, and retail operations.

Supervision & Liaison

  • Liaise with management, electrical supervisors, and electricians regarding stock availability, customer requirements, and job priorities.

  • Escalate technical or safety-related queries to appropriate personnel when required.

Retail & Customer Service

  • Provide professional, knowledgeable, and courteous service to customers purchasing electrical components and related products.

  • Assist customers with product selection, availability, basic technical information (within competency limits), and order processing.

  • Analyze customer enquiries and issues, coordinate solutions with technical staff, and ensure appropriate documentation and follow-up.

  • Process sales transactions accurately and in accordance with company procedures.

Production & Operational Support

  • Support workshop and site operations by ensuring timely availability of materials and components.

  • Coordinate with electricians and supervisors to prioritize urgent or critical stock requirements.

  • Assist with general workshop or field support duties as required, within capability and training.

Stores, Inventory & Procurement

  • Manage retail and stores inventory to ensure accurate stock levels and availability.

  • Prepare and process JIM2 Purchase Orders for parts and materials taken from stores as required.

  • Receive, check, and correctly stock incoming goods using JIM2, ensuring accuracy and traceability.

  • Assist with stock control, replenishment, stock takes, and identification of obsolete or slow-moving items.

  • Ensure all products are stored safely, labelled correctly, and displayed appropriately in the retail area.

Maintenance & Housekeeping

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the retail store, stores, and associated work areas.

  • Ensure store equipment, tools, and handling devices are kept in a safe and serviceable condition.

  • Report damaged, unsafe, or faulty equipment promptly.

Reporting & Systems

  • Maintain a working knowledge of Switchboard & Power Controls’ computer systems, including JIM2 and related inventory and sales tools.

  • Accurately record transactions, stock movements, and documentation in accordance with company procedures.

Self-Development

  • Maintain awareness of current electrical industry products, standards, and trends relevant to retail operations.

  • Complete all required Switchboard & Power Controls competency-based training.

  • Participate in agreed training and development activities identified during annual Performance Reviews.

Other Responsibilities

  • Identify, assess, and control hazards in the retail and store environment, ensuring compliance with all relevant EHS policies and procedures.

  • Actively apply and promote Switchboard & Power Controls’ Environmental Policies, Code of Environmental Practice, and Environmental Guidelines.

  • Promote and adhere to Switchboard & Power Controls’ Equal Employment Opportunity and workplace conduct policies.

  • Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by Management or the Electrical Supervisor.

Essential Skills

C Class NT Driver's License 

High Risk Work License

Construction White Card

High School Certificate or Prevocational trade Certificate

Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Jim 2 Software Experience
