Job description:

Purpose of the role:

First Quantum Minerals Exploration (FQMX) conducts active work programs across all continents utilising a full range of established and emerging exploration techniques. These work programs are conducted in accordance with FQM corporate principles, exploration group guidelines and industry best practices. Exploration programs are conducted at our mining operations, in and around communities and from remote work camps requiring a high degree of autonomy and capability at the local level. FQMX is committed to providing a safe and highly motivating workplace for our teams and collaborators via a risk-led approach. To achieve our aims and maintain our unique culture, we acknowledge the importance of highly competent and trained field teams, especially in the domains of highest risk, such as driving and drilling programs. FQMX is now actively seeking a Drilling & Safe Operations Manager to join group leadership in support of this vision.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of contractor drilling operations and other exploration activities ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational excellence

  • Demonstrate and promote the pillars of High-Performance Teams, Technical Excellence and Decisive Action.

  • Promote and embed FQM safety principles, best practice standards and exploration guidelines across our operations in support of efficient and effective delivery of key programs.

  • Lead the risk assessment process across at all levels of exploration activity.

  • Work closely with exploration leadership to develop closure plans for identified key risks and opportunities.

  • Conduct detailed evaluations of drilling partners, equipment and drilling teams in support of contractor selection.

  • Drive application of emerging innovation and productivity tools into our operations

  • Complete in field evaluations of contractor practices against exploration standards with an emphasis on training local teams to identify risk and improve safety culture.

  • Development and roll-out of training to our technical and field support staff in safe working principles with emphasis on highest risk activities (i.e. driving, drilling, remote work, aviation, emergency evacuation).

  • Support local safety representatives, delivering training and professional development as required.

  • Maintain strong relationships with FQM Safety Group, representing FQMX interest as needed at Group level.

  • Work with the Data and Systems lead to enhance capture, presentation and reporting of operations and safety information.

  • Development and presentation of budgeted proposals to support training and implementation of system improvements.

  • Represent FQM at industry events in support of network building and improvement identification.

  • Evaluate new drilling technologies and equipment for improved performance and safety

Role Requirements::

  • Motivated to play a leading role in application of a pragmatic and effective approach to safety in strong alignment with our business culture.

  • Previous experiences working with, and around exploration drilling programs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry safety standards and best practices.

  • Ability to think strategically and align with corporate goals, whilst acting locally in support of project aims.

  • Willingness to travel to remote locations and spend significant time away from employment base.

  • Capacity to train and support a diverse team of employees, consultants and contractors with varied backgrounds and technical knowledge.

  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.

  • Fluent English language skills, Spanish skills preferred, Russian/French knowledge considered advantageous.
