Our Client is a farming business situated in Munglinup, Western Australia. We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Agricultural and Horticultural Mobile Plant Operator to operate and maintain agricultural machinery used in our broadacre farming operations.

The successful applicant will be responsible for operating tractor-drawn and self-propelled agricultural plant and equipment throughout the cropping cycle, including land preparation, seeding, fertilising, spraying, cultivation and harvesting.

Responsibilities

  • Operate agricultural mobile plant and machinery safely, efficiently and in accordance with farm operating procedures.
  • Prepare, position and set up agricultural plant and machinery for daily operations.
  • Operate tractor-drawn and self-propelled machinery used for land preparation, seeding, fertilising, spraying, cultivation and harvesting.
  • Monitor machinery operation and performance to achieve accurate and efficient field operations while minimising crop damage.
  • Inspect machinery and equipment before, during and after operation to ensure it remains safe and serviceable.
  • Carry out routine servicing, maintenance and minor repairs to agricultural plant and machinery.
  • Identify mechanical or operational faults and report issues requiring further repair or maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate operational, production, machinery and maintenance records.
  • Follow workplace health and safety, chemical handling, biosecurity and environmental procedures.
  • Assist with the efficient movement, preparation and changeover of agricultural machinery and attachments according to seasonal farming requirements.

Tasks

  • The duties of the position will include, but are not limited to:
  • Preparing and positioning agricultural plant and machinery for operation.
  • Driving and manoeuvring tractors, harvesters, sprayers and other agricultural mobile plant in paddocks and around the farm.
  • Operating tractor-drawn and self-propelled plant to plough and otherwise prepare and cultivate land.
  • Operating seeding and planting equipment to sow crops at the required depth, spacing and application rate.
  • Operating agricultural machinery to apply fertilisers and other crop inputs at specified rates.
  • Operating spraying equipment for crop protection activities where appropriately trained, authorised and licensed.
  • Operating harvesters and associated machinery to harvest crops efficiently and minimise crop loss or damage.
  • Selecting, fitting, removing and changing agricultural machinery attachments and implements.
  • Calibrating and monitoring agricultural plant and equipment to ensure accurate application, distribution and collection rates.
  • Adjusting the speed, height and depth of implements according to crop, soil, paddock and operating conditions.
  • Adjusting machinery settings and controls to maintain efficient operation and avoid unnecessary damage to crops.
  • Monitoring plant operation directly and through machinery instruments, displays, gauges, GPS and other onboard systems.
  • Checking fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, tyres, belts, bearings, filters and other machinery components as required.
  • Cleaning machinery and equipment and completing routine preventative maintenance.
  • Lubricating and servicing plant and machinery in accordance with manufacturer and farm maintenance schedules.
  • Diagnosing basic mechanical and operational problems and carrying out minor repairs where appropriate.
  • Reporting mechanical faults, breakdowns and maintenance requirements that require specialist repair.
  • Maintaining records of machinery operation, hours, fuel use, maintenance, field activities and production as required.
  • Completing work and production reports.
  • Moving machinery and equipment between paddocks and work areas safely.
  • Following operating instructions, farm procedures and manufacturer specifications when using agricultural plant.
  • Complying with workplace health and safety requirements and using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Maintaining machinery and work areas in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a level of skill consistent with ANZSCO 721111 – Agricultural and Horticultural Mobile Plant Operator, Skill Level 4, which in Australia is generally demonstrated by:

  • AQF Certificate II or AQF Certificate III in a relevant field; OR
  • At least one year of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification.
  • In some circumstances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to a formal qualification.
  • Applicants must also hold any licences, registrations, permits or accreditations legally required for the particular machinery, vehicles or agricultural activities they are required to undertake.
  • A current Australian driver's licence, or the ability to obtain an appropriate licence where required for the position, is desirable.

Skills

  • The successful applicant should demonstrate:
  • Competence in operating tractor-drawn and self-propelled agricultural machinery.
  • Ability to operate tractors, seeding equipment, cultivation equipment, spreaders, sprayers and harvesting machinery relevant to broadacre farming.
  • Ability to safely prepare, position and set up machinery for field operations.
  • Ability to select, connect, disconnect and correctly use agricultural implements and attachments.
  • Knowledge of machinery calibration and the adjustment of application, distribution and collection rates.
  • Ability to adjust machinery speed, implement height and working depth according to operating conditions.
  • Ability to monitor machinery performance using gauges, instruments, displays and onboard technology.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and the ability to identify machinery faults.
  • Ability to perform routine servicing, preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
  • Understanding of safe machinery operation and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to follow operating procedures, machinery specifications and instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate work, production and machinery records.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, particularly during seeding, spraying and harvest periods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a farming team.
  • Ability to work safely for extended periods in field conditions and during seasonal peaks.
  • Sound awareness of crop protection, biosecurity and environmental requirements relevant to machinery operations.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • At least one year of relevant experience operating agricultural and horticultural mobile plant where relevant experience is being relied upon as a substitute for formal AQF qualifications.
  • Practical experience operating agricultural machinery such as tractors, seeders, cultivation equipment, spreaders, sprayers and/or harvesters.
  • Experience preparing and positioning machinery for agricultural operations.
  • Experience adjusting and monitoring machinery settings, including speed, height, working depth and application or collection rates.
  • Experience undertaking land preparation, seeding, fertilising, crop spraying, cultivation and/or harvesting operations.
  • Experience completing machinery inspections, routine servicing and preventative maintenance.
  • Experience identifying mechanical faults and carrying out minor repairs.
  • Experience maintaining machinery, production and work records.
  • Experience in broadacre cropping operations in Western Australian conditions will be highly regarded.
