About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is looking for a skilled and committed Technical Farm Hand for its Arthursleigh Farm. The Technical Farm Hand is responsible for the maintenance and repair program for machinery and equipment to ensure vehicles, cropping plant, sheep handling equipment and general facilities are in good, effective working order.

The Technical Farm Hand will support farm operations particularly in connection with the execution of the cropping, pasture, and livestock programs at Arthursleigh Farm.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • be responsible for the machinery and equipment maintenance and repair program to ensure vehicles, cropping plant, sheep handling

  • be responsible for facilitating the farm cropping and pasture program through the operation of tractors, seeders, and spraying equipment to prepare fields with chemical applications, sow crops and pastures, apply fertilizers and chemicals for weed and pest control as required

  • coordinate with the Manager of Operations and Farm Agronomist to implement cropping programs using varieties, rates and techniques as designed and directed

  • keep comprehensive records of cropping activities documenting timing, rates and conditions of chemical applications, seed, and fertiliser rates etc

  • assist in harvest of grain and fodder and the movement of grain and produce around the farm storage system as required.

  • use and adapt to new technologies in particular RFID Tagging, satellite navigation and data recording applications

  • ensure all duties are carried out in a safe manner and in accordance with University WHS policies

About you

  • ability to weld and carry out basic mechanical repairs and maintenance of farm machinery including tractors, boom sprays, seeders, 4WDs, UTV, small engines and various other equipment

  • demonstrated ability to operate tractors, boom sprays and sowing equipment including knowledge and capability in calibration techniques and use of satellite and auto steer navigation

  • certificate 3 or equivalent in Agriculture (desired)

  • hold a current Chemcert Accreditation and hold a current Class 1 NSW Driver’s License

  • demonstrated knowledge of agricultural practices in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, in particular cropping and pasture establishment and working knowledge of animal husbandry techniques for sheep and cattle

  • mechanical aptitude and the ability to carry out maintenance required to keep farm equipment in good working condition

  • previous employment in farming /cropping enterprises.
