Your role at St John of God Bunbury Hospital

St John of God Bunbury is seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Fitter to join our Engineering Services team and help keep a busy hospital running smoothly.

In this hands‑on role, you will maintain and repair essential building and engineering assets that directly support patient care, including HVAC systems, mechanical plant, hot water and steam services, medical gas reticulation and hospital beds.

The Position

  • Preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance (Planned preventative inspection, repair, maintenance and fault finding) of HVAC, mechanical and associated equipment and services so that the hospital quality standards are maintained.

  • Undertake reactive repairs to all types of HVAC and mechanical equipment to ensure that systems are restored to service with minimum interruption.

  • Work closely with and technically report to the maintenance coordinator in execution of day to day engineering activities. 

  • 1st line maintenance and repair of fan coils, AHU's, chillers, air vents and ducts, HVAC systems & associated control systems. Changing filters, pumps, belts, motors etc. Boiler work, replacing steam traps and valves.

  • Undertake reactive repairs to all types of HVAC and mechanical equipment to ensure that systems are restored to service with minimum interruption. 

  • Utilise BMS systems to ensure that HVAC and mechanical systems are operating correctly and at optimum efficiency.

  • Implementation of minor projects and Oversight and planning of major HVAC and mechanical installation work generally and modification work including pipe-work, heating / cooling central plant to improve or preserve the performance of equipment and systems. 

  • Liaise with and coordinate subcontractor activities in the area of mechanical building services. 

  • Assist and prepare for annual audit inspection of mechanical systems and plant.

  • Maintain PPM Records.

  • Accountable for uninterrupted operation and meeting departing KPIs specific to ownership area

  • Carry out daily / weekly plant room checks including BMS monitoring as covered in maintenance strategy.

  • Make recommendations for improvement of maintenance practices for reduced down time and cost optimisation.

  • On call support including phone support for hospital site.

  • Regular performance review additional to annual performance reviews.

  • Provide inputs in the maintenance of adequate stock levels for the efficient operation of HVAC and mechanical plant and services.

  • Support as required with general maintenance assisting other trades in the engineering team as required / directed. 

  • Attend team meetings 

  • Complete job history and details in computerised maintenance management system.

  • Perform housekeeping of the work area, workshop and post job clean up. 

  • Reporting on job progress to maintenance coordinator and highlight hold ups on a timely manner.

  • Attends relevant training sessions offered by SJGHC. Recognises the necessity to continually develop skills and acquire additional knowledge appropriate to the position.

You will hold a recognised trade qualification as a Mechanical Fitter and/or HVAC Technician, with a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a similar role. Proven experience in commercial building maintenance is essential, including planned and reactive works across mechanical plant and building services. You will demonstrate strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills and be comfortable working across varied environments such as plant rooms, patient areas, operating suites, kitchens, offices and outdoor settings, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and compliance.

You will work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly to understand and respond to service requests that may impact hospital operations. The role requires physical capability, including walking long distances, climbing stairs with tools and assisting with lifting equipment when required. Flexibility is essential, with availability to work overtime, after hours and participate in an on‑call roster to support breakdowns and preventative maintenance activities.

  • Salary: $74,237 to $91,620 per annum, plus 12% superannuation

  • Permanent full-time position working 76 hours per fortnight
